Sick Building Syndrome Plan
Sick building syndrome (SBS) is a situation in which occupants of a building experience acute health effects that seem to be linked to time spent in a building, but no specific illness or cause can be identified. The complaints may be localized in a particular room or zone, or may be widespread throughout the building. Poor IAQ may cause workers, occupants and even the visiting public to experience a range of non-specific symptoms that affect their comfort or health. Mold caused by water intrusion is often the culprit in SBS. The health related effects of mold exposure are still being studied. There is a growing consensus among the scientific community that exposure to mold can have an impact on the health of both allergenic and non-allergenic people. Some of the symptoms associated with SBS include: headaches, fatigue, nausea, shortness of breath, sinus congestion, eye, nose, and throat irritation.
